Prop firms whose published lists of restricted countries do not include Canada, though some may still exclude individual provinces.
Each prop firm decides which countries it serves and publishes the countries it excludes in its terms. The firms listed above do not name Canada on their restricted countries lists at present. Canada needs a closer look, because some firms accept Canadian residents but exclude individual provinces, such as Ontario, and a country level list does not show that. Check the terms and the checkout for your province as well as your country, and confirm both on the day you buy, since firms update these lists from time to time. The address on your account should match your identity documents, because the checks before a funded account or first payout will test it.
Challenge prices are often set in US dollars, so a Canadian card may add a foreign transaction fee on top of the exchange rate. Firms commonly take cards for fees, and many also take crypto. Payouts reach Canadian traders by international wire, through payment platforms such as Rise, or in stablecoins, depending on the firm. A US dollar payout into a Canadian dollar account is converted at your bank's rate, and a stablecoin payout has to be sold on an exchange before it becomes Canadian dollars. Check the methods open to Canadian residents, with their minimums, fees and timing, before you buy. Prop firm payout methods compares the main routes.
This is general information, not tax advice. The CRA taxes a Canadian resident on worldwide income from all sources, so a payout from an overseas firm belongs in your return. Payouts are paid by the firm under a contract, so they are commonly reported as business income rather than capital gains; the CRA describes business income as income from a trade or any other activity carried on for profit. Whether your trading is a business affects which costs, such as evaluation fees, you can deduct. Self employed people have until 15 June to file, but any balance owing is due by 30 April. Record each payout in Canadian dollars with the rate used, and check your position with the CRA or a qualified adviser. Prop firm income and tax explains the general principles.
Securities regulation in Canada is run by the provinces and territories. The Ontario Securities Commission says that, in general, anyone selling securities or offering investment advice in Ontario must register unless they have an exemption, and it points to the national registration search as the primary source for checking. In September 2023 the OSC issued a temporary cease trade order against the operator of a prop firm, saying it was investigating possible breaches of securities law including fraud and unregistered trading, and it urged investors to check the registration of anyone selling them an investment. Are prop firms legit covers the wider checks.
Traders in Toronto and Montreal share New York's clock, so US stock markets open at 9:30am and close at 4pm local time. The London session begins at about 3am Eastern, and its overlap with New York, from about 8am to noon Eastern, is usually the busiest period for major currency pairs. In Vancouver the US stock open is 6:30am Pacific and London starts at about midnight. Most of Canada changes its clocks on the same dates as the US, so US session times stay fixed in local time. Check the firm's daily loss reset time, often midnight on its server clock or 5pm New York time, in your own time zone.
Each firm's profile lists its programmes and restricted countries, and the comparison table can be filtered by country, although province rules sit in each firm's terms. The prop firm directory covers every firm on the site, other best prop firm lists group firms by platform and rules, and questions to ask before buying a challenge sets out what to confirm with a firm first.
Firms set eligibility themselves, and some exclude individual provinces such as Ontario while accepting the rest of Canada. They do not always explain why. Because this page lists firms by country, a firm shown here may still exclude your province, so read the terms and check the checkout for your province before you pay.
The CRA taxes Canadian residents on worldwide income, so payouts from overseas firms are reportable. They are commonly treated as business income rather than capital gains, because the firm pays you under a contract. Self employed filers have until 15 June to file but must pay any balance by 30 April. This is general information, so confirm your position with the CRA or an adviser.
It depends on the firm. Many evaluation firms describe their accounts as simulated and do not claim registration. The Ontario Securities Commission says anyone selling securities or giving investment advice in Ontario must generally register unless exempt, and the national registration search shows who is registered. If a firm claims registration, check it there before you rely on it.
In Eastern time, London opens at about 3am, US stocks open at 9:30am and the London and New York overlap runs from about 8am to noon. In Pacific time everything is three hours earlier, so US stocks open at 6:30am. Convert the firm's daily reset time as well, since it decides which trades count towards each day.
