Eligibility for Malaysian traders

Each prop firm decides which countries it serves and publishes the countries it excludes in its terms. The firms listed above do not name Malaysia on their restricted countries lists at present. Firms update these lists from time to time, so confirm that Malaysia is accepted at checkout and in the current terms on the day you buy. The name and address on your account should match your MyKad or passport, because the identity checks before a funded account or first payout will test them.

Paying fees and receiving payouts

Challenge prices are often set in US dollars, so a ringgit card payment is converted at your bank's rate and may carry a foreign transaction fee. Check that your card is enabled for online and international payments. Payouts reach Malaysian traders by international bank transfer, through payment platforms such as Rise, or in stablecoins, depending on the firm. A stablecoin payout has to be sold on an exchange before it becomes ringgit, so check the status and charges of any platform you use. Prop firm payout methods compares the main routes.

How prop firm payouts are commonly taxed in Malaysia

This is general information, not tax advice. LHDN says that income tax is charged on the income of any person accruing in or derived from Malaysia or received in Malaysia from outside Malaysia, and that gains or profits from carrying on a business are liable to tax. Its guidance also says that income derived from outside Malaysia and received in Malaysia is exempt, but whether a payout for trading you carry out from Malaysia counts as derived from Malaysia or from outside it depends on the facts. Payouts are paid by the firm under a contract rather than earned on assets you own, so where they are taxable they are commonly treated as business income. The year of assessment follows the calendar year, and the Form B return for business income is due by 30 June, or 15 July when filed online. Record each payout in ringgit with the rate used, and check your position with LHDN or a licensed tax agent. Prop firm income and tax explains the general principles.

What Bank Negara Malaysia and the SC say

Bank Negara Malaysia describes an illegal foreign exchange trading scheme as the buying or selling of foreign currency by an individual or company in Malaysia with anyone who is not a licensed onshore bank or has not obtained its approval under the Financial Services Act 2013 or the Islamic Financial Services Act 2013, and it advises the public to deal only with licensed onshore banks. It keeps a Financial Consumer Alert List of companies and websites, and the Securities Commission Malaysia keeps an Investor Alert List of unauthorised entities, warning that anyone who invests through them is not protected under Malaysian securities laws. How these rules apply to a prop firm evaluation depends on how the arrangement is structured, so check both lists for the firm and take qualified advice before you pay. Are prop firms legit covers the wider checks.

Trading hours from Malaysia

Malaysia is eight hours ahead of GMT all year, with no daylight saving, so session times shift by an hour when the UK and the US change their clocks. The Tokyo stock market opens at 8am Malaysian time, so the Asian session covers the Malaysian working day. London opens at about 3pm in the northern summer and 4pm in winter, and US stock markets open at 9:30pm or 10:30pm. The London and New York overlap, usually the busiest period for major currency pairs and US indices, runs from about 8pm to midnight in summer and an hour later in winter. A daily reset at 5pm New York time falls at about 5am or 6am, so check which trading day an early morning trade counts towards.

What to check before you buy

  • Malaysian eligibility. Confirm that Malaysia is accepted at checkout and in the current terms, not only in older reviews.
  • Alert lists. Search Bank Negara Malaysia's Financial Consumer Alert List and the SC's Investor Alert List for the firm.
  • Payout route. Find out which payout methods are open to Malaysian residents, with their minimums, fees and timing.
  • Daily reset time. Convert the daily loss reset to Malaysian time for both halves of the year.
  • Tax records. Keep a log of every fee and payout in ringgit from your first purchase.

Each firm's profile lists its programmes and restricted countries, and the comparison table can be filtered by country. The prop firm directory covers every firm on the site, other best prop firm lists group firms by platform and rules, and how to choose a prop firm you can trust sets out the checks to make first.

Questions about prop firms for Malaysian Traders

Can Malaysians buy prop firm challenges?

The firms listed on this page do not currently name Malaysia on their restricted countries lists. Eligibility is set by each firm and can change, so confirm it at checkout and in the terms on the day you buy. Separately, check the firm against Bank Negara Malaysia's Financial Consumer Alert List and the SC's Investor Alert List before you pay.

What does Bank Negara Malaysia say about forex trading?

Bank Negara Malaysia describes buying or selling foreign currency in Malaysia with anyone who is not a licensed onshore bank, or who lacks its approval, as an illegal foreign exchange trading scheme, and it advises dealing only with licensed onshore banks. How that applies to a prop firm evaluation depends on how it is structured, so take qualified advice.

Are prop firm payouts taxable in Malaysia?

LHDN charges tax on income accruing in or derived from Malaysia, and business profits are taxable. Its guidance exempts income derived from outside Malaysia and received in Malaysia, but where a payout for trading done from Malaysia is sourced depends on the facts. This is general information, so check your position with LHDN or a licensed tax agent.

What hours suit Malaysian prop traders?

The Tokyo market opens at 8am Malaysian time, so the Asian session covers the working day. London opens at about 3pm or 4pm and US stocks at 9:30pm or 10:30pm, so the busiest overlap runs late into the evening. A daily reset at 5pm New York time falls at about 5am or 6am, so check the firm's reset time.
