Eligibility for South African traders

Each prop firm decides which countries it serves and publishes the countries it excludes in its terms. The firms listed above do not name South Africa on their restricted countries lists at present. Firms update these lists from time to time, sometimes with little notice, so confirm that South Africa is accepted at checkout and in the current terms on the day you buy. The name and address on your account should match your identity documents, because the checks before a funded account or first payout will test them.

Paying fees and receiving payouts

Challenge prices are often set in US dollars, so a South African card payment is converted at your bank's rate and may carry a foreign transaction fee. Money sent abroad falls under the exchange control rules that the South African Reserve Bank applies through the banks, which include annual allowances for individuals. Payouts reach South African traders by international transfer, through payment platforms such as Rise, or in stablecoins, depending on the firm. A stablecoin payout has to be sold before it becomes rand, and the FSCA requires crypto asset service providers to hold a licence, so check that any platform you use is licensed. Compare the minimums, fees and timing of each method open to South African residents before you buy. Prop firm payout methods compares the main routes.

How prop firm payouts are commonly taxed in South Africa

This is general information, not tax advice. SARS taxes residents on their worldwide income, subject to certain exclusions, so a payout from an overseas firm belongs in your return. Payouts are paid by the firm under a contract rather than earned on assets you own, so they are commonly declared as profits from a business or trade rather than as capital gains. SARS says that anyone who receives income other than remuneration is generally a provisional taxpayer, and provisional taxpayers pay at least two amounts in advance during the year based on their estimated taxable income. The tax year runs from 1 March to the end of February. Record each payout in rand with the rate used, and check your position with SARS or a registered tax practitioner. Prop firm income and tax explains the general principles.

What the FSCA says

The Financial Sector Conduct Authority says that people and entities must obtain a licence from it before they are allowed to provide financial services and products to customers, and that crypto asset service providers must also be licensed. Its website offers a search to check whether a firm is authorised. Many prop firms describe their evaluations as simulated trading and do not claim an FSCA licence, so read what the firm says about its own status, and if it claims a licence, confirm it with the FSCA. Are prop firms legit covers the wider checks.

Trading hours from South Africa

South Africa has no daylight saving and sits close to the main sessions. London opens at about 9am in the northern summer and 10am in winter, and US stock markets open at 3:30pm or 4:30pm. The London and New York overlap, usually the busiest period for major currency pairs and US indices, falls in the South African afternoon, from about 2pm to 6pm, while the Asian session runs overnight and into the morning. A daily reset at 5pm New York time falls at about 11pm or midnight, so check which trading day a late evening trade counts towards.

What to check before you buy

  • South African eligibility. Confirm that South Africa is accepted at checkout and in the current terms, not only in older reviews.
  • Currency and card fees. Check the currency of the price and what your bank charges on foreign transactions.
  • Payout route. Find out which payout methods are open to South African residents, with their minimums, fees and timing.
  • Crypto platform. If you take stablecoin payouts, check that the platform you use to sell them holds an FSCA licence.
  • Daily reset time. Convert the daily loss reset to South African time for both halves of the year.
  • Tax records. Keep a log of every fee and payout in rand, and plan for provisional tax payments.

Each firm's profile lists its programmes and restricted countries, and the comparison table can be filtered by country. The prop firm directory covers every firm on the site, other best prop firm lists group firms by platform and rules, and what traders should expect from payouts explains how the payout process works.

Questions about prop firms for South African Traders

Can South Africans use overseas prop firms?

Many overseas firms accept South African residents, and the firms listed on this page do not currently name South Africa on their restricted countries lists. Eligibility is set by each firm and can change, so confirm it at checkout and in the terms on the day you buy. Money sent abroad also falls under the Reserve Bank's exchange control rules, applied through your bank.

Are prop firm payouts taxable in South Africa?

Generally yes. SARS taxes residents on worldwide income, subject to certain exclusions, and payouts are commonly declared as business or trade income. Anyone with income other than a salary is generally a provisional taxpayer and makes advance payments during the year. This is general information, so check your position with SARS or a registered tax practitioner.

Are prop firms licensed by the FSCA?

Many are not. Prop firms often describe their evaluations as simulated trading and do not claim an FSCA licence. The FSCA says people and entities need a licence before they provide financial services and products to customers, and it offers a search to check whether a firm is authorised. If a firm claims a licence, confirm it there.

What hours suit South African prop traders?

London opens at about 9am in the northern summer and 10am in winter, and US stocks open at 3:30pm or 4:30pm. The London and New York overlap, from about 2pm to 6pm, is usually the most active period for major pairs and US indices. A daily reset at 5pm New York time falls at about 11pm or midnight, so check the firm's reset time.
