Challenge prices are often set in US dollars, so a card payment in shillings is converted at your bank's rate and may carry a foreign transaction fee. Check that your card is enabled for online and international payments. Payouts reach Kenyan traders by international bank transfer, through payment platforms such as Rise, or in stablecoins, depending on the firm. A dollar transfer can be received into a dollar account or converted to shillings by your bank, while a stablecoin payout has to be sold on an exchange first, so check the status and charges of any platform you use. Prop firm payout methods compares the main routes.
This is general information, not tax advice. KRA says that individual income tax is charged on all the income of a person, whether resident or not, which accrued in or was derived from Kenya, and it lists business income among the types of income taxed. How a payout from an overseas firm for trading done in Kenya fits that test depends on your circumstances, but payouts are paid under a contract rather than earned on assets you own, so they are commonly treated as business income rather than capital gains. The year of income follows the calendar year, and every individual with a KRA PIN files a return on iTax by 30 June of the following year, even when there is no income to declare. Record each payout in shillings with the rate used, and check your position with KRA or a qualified tax adviser. Prop firm income and tax explains the general principles.
The Capital Markets Authority licenses online forex brokers and money managers under the Capital Markets (Online Foreign Exchange Trading) Regulations, 2017, which cover internet based trading of foreign exchange and contracts for difference. Under those regulations, carrying on business as an online forex broker or money manager without the relevant CMA licence is an offence. The CMA publishes a list of its licensees, and in September 2026 it cautioned the public against entities offering investment services in Kenya without the requisite licence or approval. Many prop firms describe their evaluations as simulated trading and do not claim a CMA licence, so read what a firm says about its own status and, if it claims a licence, confirm it on the CMA's list. Are prop firms legit covers the wider checks.
