How futures prop firms work

  1. Buy an evaluation. You pay a one time fee or a monthly subscription for a simulated futures account, from $49 a month for $50K.
  2. Pass it. Reach the profit target, usually $3,000 on a $50K account, without hitting the drawdown limit or breaking a rule.
  3. Get funded. Some firms charge an activation fee when you pass. You then trade a funded account under the same kind of rules.
  4. Get paid. Most firms pay 80% to 100% of profits, a few start at 50%. Payouts open once you clear a buffer or a set number of winning days.

The rules that decide if you pass

Drawdown. An end of day drawdown only moves at the close. An intraday one follows your peak equity tick by tick, open profit included. Futures drawdown rules explained.

Daily loss limit. Many firms stop you for the day after a set loss, usually $1,000 to $1,250 on a $50K account. Some have none.

Consistency. A consistency rule caps how much of your profit can come from one day, often 30% to 50%.

Fees. Count the activation fee and market data fees, not only the evaluation price. Futures prop firm data fees.

Frequently asked questions

What is a futures prop firm?

A company that sells evaluations on simulated futures accounts. If you reach the profit target without breaking its rules, it gives you a funded account and pays you a share of the profit, usually 80% to 100%. You trade futures contracts such as the E-mini S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 on platforms like NinjaTrader, Tradovate and TradingView.

Are futures prop firms legit?

The established ones have long payout records: Topstep has run for 15 years, and My Funded Futures has a 4.9 Trustpilot rating from more than 22,000 reviews. But you are buying an evaluation, most funded accounts are still simulated, and firms can change their rules. Read a firm's payout rules and its recent reviews before you buy.

How much does a futures prop firm cost?

Among our top 10, a $50K evaluation costs from $49 a month at Topstep to $249 one time at Apex, before any code. Some firms add an activation fee when you pass, up to $149, and some charge market data fees once you are funded.

What is the best futures prop firm?

My Funded Futures, for most traders: the highest Trustpilot rating of any futures firm, one time pricing with no activation fee, and daily payouts on its Rapid plan. Our best futures prop firms ranking explains the top 10.

What is the difference between futures and forex prop firms?

Futures firms trade exchange listed contracts on futures platforms such as NinjaTrader, Tradovate and Rithmic, and set their rules in dollars, for example a $2,000 drawdown on a $50K account. Most of their evaluations are a single step. Forex and CFD firms trade on MetaTrader and similar platforms, set rules as percentages and often use two step challenges.

Which futures prop firms have no daily loss limit?

My Funded Futures, FundedNext Futures (Flex), Take Profit Trader and TradeDay set none, and Bulenox has none on its intraday trailing option. See futures prop firms with no daily limit.
